Adverting to my letter of the 12th June 1901,

D.W.6782/5210, on the subject of additional dock accommoda-

tion proposed to be constructed by the Hong Kong & Whampoa

Dock Co at Hong Kong, I am commanded by My Lords

Commissioners of the Admiralty to acquaint you, for the

information of the Secretary of State for the Colonies,

that a reply from the Naval Commander-in-Chief on the

China Station has been received.

I am now to state that My Lords are willing to

accept the compromise proposed by Mr W. Keswick, M.P. in

his letter of 16th February last, a copy of which

6358 accompanied your letter of the 28th February 1901, viz:-

That H.M. Ships should at other times than during periods of

War or when war is considered threatening, be docked in

the ordinary course of rotation, but that if for any other

reason the docking of one of H.M. Ships is considered a

matter of urgent necessity the Company will promptly comply

with a notice from the Governor of the Colony to that

effect.
